One all time favorite activities is to make homemade tea. Nothing beats making your own fresh and delicious, hot or cold tea to calm you down and enjoy after a long, stressful day. I feel like store bought teas have so many unnecessary additives and may not contain fresh, whole ingredients. This lemon ginger tea recipe is one of my all time favorites to make because I know exactly what’s in it, it’s so simple and tastes so, so good.
One of the main reasons I love this ginger tea so much is because there are so many benefits to drinking it. Ginger alone is packed with antioxidants, can reduce signs of aging, aids in weight loss, improves gut health and digestion, and can help lower cholesterol. These are only some of the benefits! Lemon Ginger Tea Details
- Take Caution With Ginger. Unfortunately, ginger tea isn’t for everybody. If you have a sensitive stomach you should be careful about drinking ginger because it has such a strong flavor and can upset your stomach. However, if you know you want to try this tea and you have a sensitive stomach, you can decrease the amount of ginger you add and give it a try in the middle of the day or in the morning so it doesn’t upset your stomach before bed.
- Avoid Bitterness. Another tip for making this tea is not to boil the honey when you boil all the other ingredients. This is because the natural sugars in the honey could burn in the time that the tea is boiling and cause your tea to have a bitter flavor. Instead, try adding the honey after you remove the tea from off the hot stove to avoid burning it and ensure your tea has the sweetness you desire.
- Time. This recipe can be done from start to finish in as little as ten minutes. This really helps when you are making it and need to get on the move.
- Coarsely chopped. While this isn’t the dictionary definition, when I say coarsely chopped I mean to just put your peace of ginger on a cutting board and tart slicing away. You can cut slices, mince, or chop your ginger in whatever way is easiest since for this recipe it doesn’t really matter and we’ll be straining the liquid anyway.
How to Prep Fresh Ginger
When looking at a fresh ginger root, it can be slightly difficult to figure out how to approach the thing and get it ready to use. But don’t worry, it’s not as intimidating as it looks. The first step is to cut off the amount that you want to use. I recommend trying to find an even area that has few bumps. Then, treat it like you would a carrot and peal off the skin. You don’t have to do this since the only reason we peel ginger is because the skin is tougher than the flesh and we won’t be eating the ginger anyway. However, if you decide not to peel your ginger, you’re going to want to spend a good amount of time scrubbing at the outer skin to remove any germs and excess dirt. That’s it, now your ginger is ready to use.
Like I said before, one of the main reasons I love this tea recipe is because it is so easy to make and the list of ingredients is so short.
You’ll Need:
1 and 1/2 cups of water
2 teaspoons of fresh ginger coarsely chopped
½ tablespoon of lemon juice (about ½ of a lemon)
½ tablespoon of honey
Directions:
- Add the water, ginger, and lemon juice into a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil on high for 3-4 minutes. Strain tea into a mug to remove ginger and any lemon seeds.
- Add your honey and stir until it’s dissolved. Allow your tea to cool for at least one minute (if not more) before you drink because it will be very hot. If it’s still too hot, try adding some ice cubes to help speed the cooling process.
Love it!
